Q: How much of Dresden was actually destroyed in World War II?

• A: Approximately 75% of Dresden’s historic center was completely decimated by Allied bombing raids in February 1945. Landmark structures like the Royal Palace, the Frauenkirche and the Semper Opera House lay in ruins for decades. Q: Is the Dresden Frauenkirche original or rebuilt after the war?

• A: The Frauenkirche is a modern reconstruction completed in 2005 using a mix of original salvaged stones and new sandstone. The dark bricks visible on the facade today are the actual pieces salvaged from the rubble heap left behind after the 1945 bombings.

Q: Where can I see Soviet-era architecture and Cold War history in Dresden?

• A: The best place to experience Dresden's Cold War past is the New Town (Neustadt) and the areas surrounding Prager Straße. While the Old Town was rebuilt to mirror its pre-war Baroque glory, other parts of the city were explicitly designed using Socialist Classicism and Soviet modernist styles during the German Democratic Republic (GDR) era.

Stop 1: The World-Famous Meißen Porcelain Manufactory
Suggested Time: 1.5 to 2 Hours
Start your morning where Meißen's global reputation was born. The Meißen Porcelain Manufactory has been producing some of the world's finest ceramics since the early 18th century.

• Expert Guide Tip: Private tours inside the live demonstration workshops are excellent for groups but can be quite costly for individual travellers. They also need to be booked in advance. To get the absolute best value, we recommend using the audio guide to accompany your visit through the demonstration workshops. These visits take place at fixed timings throughout the day. Afterwards tour the exhibits in the museum with your guide, if you have one, or on your own to understand the hidden stories behind the art.
• The Porcelain Cafe: Don't leave without stopping for a quick coffee and cake break at the on-site café. In true luxury fashion, every single pastry and hot drink is served entirely on genuine, exquisite Meißen porcelain.

Stop 2: Ascend Castle Hill to Albrechtsburg and the Cathedral
Suggested Time spent on Castle Hill: 2 Hours
From the manufactory, skip the uphill trek and catch the local city bus directly up to Castle Hill (Schlossberg). This dramatic hill dominates the town's skyline and holds two architectural masterpieces:

1. Albrechtsburg Castle: Germany's oldest castle structure, featuring magnificent late-Gothic architecture and sweeping historic halls.
2. Meißen Dom (Cathedral): A striking Gothic cathedral that stands proudly next to the castle, dominating the landscape.

Stop 3: A Historic Lunch at the Domkeller or Burgkeller
Both the Domkeller and Burgkeller have fanstastic views, but my favorite is The Domkeller. Officially recognized as the oldest restaurant in Meißen, its origins trace all the way back to the year 1270. 
Originally serving as the cellar and service hub for Castle Hill, this resilient building managed to survive medieval raids, the Thirty Years' War, and both World Wars.

• The Highlight: Request a table on their small, panoramic balcony. The views look straight out over the Elbe River and the iconic red-tiled rooftops of the town below. It provides the perfect, romantic setting for lunch, paired perfectly with a glass of crisp, locally produced Saxon wine.

Stop 4: A Winding Walk Through Meißen’s Old Town: 
After lunch, begin a leisurely descent down the hill. Follow the charming, winding cobblestone streets and hidden alleys that lead down into the vibrant Market Square (Marktplatz).
As you stroll past centuries-old architecture, you will reach the Frauenkirche Meißen. This unique church holds a fascinating local secret: a beautiful carillon and organ made entirely out of porcelain pipes. From the square, your walk can continue smoothly all the way to the Meißen Altstadt Station, making it incredibly easy to catch your return train.

What to Do Before or After Our Walking Tour in Dresden is one of the most common questions guests ask.

Start Your Day Right (Before the Tour)
If your tour is in the morning, take some time to enjoy Dresden’s café culture.
A great place to begin is CAMONDAS, where you can enjoy high-quality chocolate and coffee in a unique setting right in the Old Town. Pick the one on Schloss Strasse if possible as it even has a small Chocolate Museum. Opens at 11 am
Pair your coffee anywhere with a slice of Dresden Eierschecke, the city’s signature cake. Light, creamy, and layered—it’s something you won’t easily find elsewhere. Get it at any Cafe. 
If you have a bit of extra time, take a short walk along the Elbe at the Terrassenufer. It’s a peaceful way to ease into the day before diving into Dresden’s history. The best way is to cross the river to the Northern bank using the Augustus Bridge and then walk along the river to the East. This follows the scenic cycling route that extends till Prague. Walk about 25 minutes to the Rosengarten, a Café in an historic landscaped rose garden on the banks of the river. Taste some regional wine.

Plan Around Museum Opening HoursIf you want to combine your tour with a visit to the Green Vault in the Royal Palace or with a visit to the Gallery of Old Masters, timing is important:

• The Residenzschloss is closed on Tuesdays
• The Gallery of Old Masters is closed on Mondays

A River Cruise after a walking tour. There’s no better way to relax than sitting back on a historic paddle steamer and watch the city slip by.

Rick Steves was in Dresden to research his new book, and I was his guide!!
It was amazing to guide such a famous travel expert through Dresden's streets, soaking in his enthusiasm for my city.

He had been here earlier of course, when he first wrote the book. But this was for his new edition and we carefully went over every line in his older one to see what had changed. And is Rick thorough! When you read the book, know that he himself has walked every inch of that route and examined exact details of what you will see. 

Throughout the day, we chatted about Dresden's historical and architectural marvels, as well as its art treasures. Rick was fascinated by the city's commitment to continuous revival and transformation.
Walking out of the Old Masters Gallery, Rick turned to me and asked in all seriousness: would it not be right to say that Dresden is the cultural heart of Germany? It was music to my ears. 

His enthusiasm for travel and discovery has infected millions of travellers through the years, and it was incredible to see the city through his eyes. I can't wait to see how Dresden will be featured in his new book, knowing our day together played a part in it.
