Experience Meißen - Medieval Old Town with Castle and Cathedral

Are you looking to escape the hustle of Dresden for a day filled with dramatic hilltop views, centuries of royal secrets, and world-famous craftsmanship? A day trip from Dresden to Meißen is the perfect addition to your Saxon holiday. Located just a short train ride down the Elbe River, Meißen is a stunning medieval gem that feels frozen in time.

Meissen, spelt „Meißen“ in German, has never been destroyed in its 1,100 year history. After it was founded, the town served as the capital of the whole region and gave it its name. for more than 500 years.
Witness to this is the castle hill, which includes the Albrechtsburg, Germany oldest palace, dating back to the 15th century, and Meissen Cathedral, Saxony’s oldest church, also the burial site of famous Saxon rulers.
But Meissen is also the brand of Europe’s oldest, and, probably, the world’s most famous porcelain.
After the European Hard Porcelain had been invented in Dresden in the year 1708, production was moved first to the Albrechtsburg, then to a
new manufactory site, which offers a world of experiences and a museum.
The Church of Our Lady at the market square has the oldest carillon made from Meissen Porcelain and its organ even has a set of porcelain pipes.
Meissen is also the center of the Saxon wine region, and wine has been grown for more than 850 years.
We will explore all this on our excursion, and you will be drawn in by the quaint charm of Meissen’s small lanes and stairways. And we can take a lunch, coffee or wine break in one of the old inns atop the Castle Hill that offers a view of the red rooftops of Meissen, while the waters of the mighty Elbe River pass by.

This is a truly charming, unhurried excursion to one of the oldest towns of Saxony. Do not miss out on it.
