Tour 03
Neustadt Tour

Picture
Neustadt, the 'new' city is the other face of Dresden. The one tourists are least likely to see unless they are staying that side of town. Grungy, artistic, bohemian..this is where the young locals hang out. We will visit Pfunds Molkerei, the most beautiful milk shop in the world, explore alleys and courtyards, walk through the stunning and artistic Kunsthofpassage, interpret street art and learn about the trends that have originated in this part of town. Do this at the end of the day so that you can stay on after the tour and just soak in the atmosphere in one of the pubs or cafes of your choice.
Tipp: The Culinary tour will also head into Neustadt. You can consider taking that tour and then staying on in Neustadt afterwards.
Price: 90€
Duration: 1.5 hours

Tour 04

The former summer palace of the Saxon kings- Pillnitz Castle

Picture
Pillnitz, the summer residence of the Saxon rulers was to be a little like Venice, a little like Versailles and also reflect the longing for the idyllic Orient. Impossible? Not at all! The most glamorous ruler of Saxon- August the Strong pulled it off with great aplomb. Explore the sprawling landscaped gardens with their Pavilions, visit the palace with its chinoiserie elements and then, if time permits, take a historic steam boat back to Dresden along the famous Elbe Valley. The interesting sights along the river include the romantic wine slopes from where Dresden’s wine comes from, the most expensive real estate of Europe before the World wars, and grand castles that line the river like pearls on a necklace, as well as the famous and notorious bridges and their stories.
Note: In case steamboats cannot run due to extremely low water levels, the return to Dresden city centre will also be by public transport.
Duration: approximately 4 hours. Starting and ending in Dresden city centre.
Price: 140€ base price for a group + 28€ extra per person (public transport + park and museum ticket steam boat + steam boat)

My trademark tours: Psychology Writes History 1 and 2

Delve deeper into history. These two tours look beyond facts and analyse the human motivations that shaped the turbulent and dark period of the 20th Century. My previous background in psychology and my perspective as an 'outsider' shape my understanding of these times in a unique way. 'Deconstruct' the dark charisma of Adolf Hitler along with me or learn about the methods of the oppressive former East German Secret Police, repression and finally breaking through to freedom. Read details below

Tour 31
Psychology Writes History 1- Deconstructing the Hitler Myth

Picture
Psychology Writes History 1- Deconstructing the Hitler Myth.
Adolf Hitler, Nazis and the rise and fall of the Third Reich are subjects that continue to fascinate and perplex us. On this 2 hour walking tour I explain the chain of events, the blatant and subtle use of propaganda, subliminal messages and the dark charisma of Adolf Hitler that led to the catastrophic events of the second world war. This tour explores the psychological underpinnings and takes into account human motivations and ambitions and how they shape history. It is for those with a deep interest in the subject.
Note: This tour will focus almost entirely on this toipc. If you have not seen Dresden at all before doing this please inform me in advance so that I can customise it for you, or do a regular walking tour separately, or do the Hitler, Third Reich and World War 2 tour.

Psychology Writes History 2- Dresden's long wait for freedom

The end of WW II and the Nazi era was followed by another totalitarian regime and repression that lasted 40 years. Dissension, personal and civil courage led to the Peaceful Revolution in 1989 and the reunification of Germany in 1990.
This is a great tour if you are seeing the city for the first time, but are also interested in the Cold War and the times of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). We walk through the city centre of Dresden, and you see all the major highlights and iconic buildings as in a classic two hour Walking Tour of Dresden, but in addition there is a focus on the years between 1945 and 1990.
This tour becomes spectacular as a 3.5 hour option that includes a trip to the Stasi Memorial- the former prison and interrogation centre where you understand how repression, fear and intimidation work in times of 'supposed peace'. I call this tour Psychology Writes History 2- Dresden's long wait for freedom
Prices:
2 hour option: 100€
3.5 hour option: 140€ plus 6€ each for tickets into the Stasi Museum and tram ticket to get there.
